Round and Square Dowels for Crafts & Woodworking

What are dowels used for?

Wooden dowel rods are versatile supplies used in crafts, furniture making, cabinetry, home décor, and general woodworking. They can reinforce joints, align wood pieces, create handles or pegs, and add decorative details to a project. Longer rods are also useful for banners, wall hangings, closet rods, curtain rods, and display projects.

Some creative uses are:

• Wooden mobiles, wind chimes, and hanging nursery décor
• Plant supports, trellises, and small garden markers
• Toy construction, doll furniture, and model building
• Peg rails, coat hooks, and kitchen utensil racks
• Tiered stands, shelving accents, and tabletop organizers
• Puppet handles, flags, and classroom craft projects
• Holiday ornaments, wreath frames, and seasonal decorations
• Drawer pulls, cabinet handles, and furniture details
• Looms, weaving frames, and yarn organizers
• Signposts, table numbers, and retail display props

Round wooden dowel rods are commonly used for joinery, spindles, hanging projects, and crafts. Square wooden dowels work well for frames, trim, models, and projects that need flat sides or defined edges.

What type of wood is best for my project?

Birch dowels have a smooth, fine grain and are easy to cut, sand, paint, and stain. Birch is a versatile option for craft projects, models, light-duty furniture components, and general woodworking where a clean, consistent surface is important.

Ash dowels are strong, flexible, and impact-resistant. Ash is well suited for handles, supports, furniture parts, and other projects where the dowel may need to withstand pressure or repeated use without breaking easily.

Oak dowels are dense, durable, and known for their visible grain pattern. Oak wooden dowel rods are a good choice for furniture, cabinetry, exposed joinery, and decorative woodworking where strength and a traditional hardwood appearance are priorities.

For painted crafts and detailed work, birch is often the easiest option. For applications that benefit from flexibility and impact resistance, ash may be preferable. For durable furniture projects and visible woodwork, oak is often the best fit.

In general, hardwood dowels are a strong choice for furniture, woodworking, and projects that need lasting support. For decorative crafts, choose the wood species that best matches your preferred color, grain, or finish.

What diameters of dowels do you carry?

Depending on the length and wood type, we carry dowels in ⅛″, 3⁄16″, ¼″, 5⁄16″, ⅜″, 7⁄16″, ½″, ⅝″, ¾″, ⅞″, 1″, 1⅛″, 1¼″, 1½″, 1¾″, 2″ diameters. Our ash dowels come in larger diameters, while oak and birch come in smaller diameters.

What’s the difference between a dowel and dowel pin?

A dowel is a longer piece of wood that can be used at its full length or cut to fit a project. Long wooden dowels are often used for crafts, furniture components, supports, hanging displays, and closet or curtain rods.

Wood dowel pins are shorter, precut pieces designed primarily for joining two sections of wood. They fit into matching drilled holes and are often glued in place to strengthen and align the joint. Fluted and spiral pins have grooves that help distribute glue and allow excess air or adhesive to escape during assembly. Table pins are commonly used for furniture and table-leaf alignment.

What size dowel do I need for a closet or curtain rod?

For closet applications, a diameter around 1 to 1⅜ inches is a common starting point, although longer spans or heavier loads may require a thicker rod, center support, or two shorter rods. For coats, heavy pants, or shoe organizers, opt for a larger diameter.

For a wooden dowel curtain rod, lightweight curtains may work with a diameter under an inch, while heavier drapes usually need a thicker rod and additional brackets. Before ordering, measure the opening carefully and make sure the rod diameter fits your brackets, sockets, finials, or dowel caps.
